Singer-songwriter Keren Ann had the uncomfortable position of being signed to Blue Note Records post-Norah Jones, but she continued adding tools to her belt to help her to stand-out. Her sixth album, 101, was self-written and produced. The album's lead single, the lightly bopping "My Name is Trouble," was released in November 2010. She kept a cryptic Tumblr that counted down the days to the album's release with brief audio clips ("44 candles... 43 journies...") and accompanying art.
A fine album but the cover and femme fatalle theme...I don't know. I have all of Keren Ann's albums and will happily purchase this one, but the short haircut...why do women cut their hair when they near forty? If this was about the theme to fit some image she or her record company thought would sell more records it was a decision some of us could have lived without. The music is why we buy Keren Ann's albums but we like her with long hair because that is the Keren Ann we have come to know and love. So Keren Ann...please grow your hair back. The album would have had a better look without the gun and the bobbed hair. The 101 drawings for what I perceive may be the cover of a single was the better choice. Anyway, can't wait for the record to come out.
