Junk Culture, a new addition to the Illegal Art label of mashup and electronic artists, uses samples, field recordings, found sound, and--wait for it--plays original music to create the debut EP West Coast. Deepak Mantena, the person behind Junk Culture, took a lifelong habit of recording everything around him onto a pocket recorder and made that the basis for West Coast. Junk Culture’s next project, which yes, Mantena started before this one was released, takes a more traditional approach--you know, writing songs, and then maybe singing them. There will still be samples, but for purists devoted to the ethos of the Illegal Art label West Coast may be as good as Junk Culture gets.
