This is the debut of Julian Plenti, the stage name of Paul Banks, the lead singer of Interpol, but that doesn't mean a batch of brand-new songs. Julian Plenti is Skyscraper had a long incubation period, as the name and some of the songs predate Interpol by years; Banks has been living with the seeds of this album for a long time. The tightly controlled guitars and, of course, Banks's voice will be familiar to fans of Interpol, but there are also some sounds that, while not a radical departure, might fit awkwardly on an Interpol album. A piano melody that doesn't lead into crashing guitars, strings that build without a resolution--these are subdued effects that sound like the work a lone man.
