Until my sophomore year of college, when I grew a pair of hypothetical balls, I had a slight thing for John Mayer. It wasn't until I threw 1972 into my stereo that I felt the exact same guilt I once experienced whilst enjoying my beloved Johnny. Unlike his bastard counterpart, though, Josh Rouse genuinely fulfills the role of retro love machine, pimpin' it with bad lines like "It's the end of the night, and I'm feeling sexual" from "Under Your Charms." But with a few songs that mirror the more socially acceptable Spoon and Ben Kweller (expected 1970s songwriters aside), 1972 is almost less embarrassing a love than Room for Squares.
