Ah, eccentricity -- the bond that transcends time and geography. Freak-folk chanteuse Josephine Foster has recently brought to life a suitable partnership with a kindred spirit from another time, Emily Dickinson. In keeping with the Dickinson's own brand of aberrant behavior, Foster assembled the 27-song cycle that would become Graphic As A Star over a winter spent in relative isolation. While settled in a remote Spanish mountain village, one of the few books Foster had with her was the collected poetry of Emily Dickinson. The end result: Dickinson's poetry set to Foster's melodies and arrangements. Although Graphic showcases more traditional arrangements and is generally more accessible than 2005's Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You, it's not a dramatic departure from Foster's curious, anachronistic style and is certainly an effort worthy of one of New Weird America's most notable citizens.
