One of the more charismatic and prolific figures in underground rock, John Langford has kept the wonderfully shambolic Mekons running strong for decades. In addition to putting in work with the Waco Brothers and Pine Valley Cosmonauts, among many others, the Welsh Renaissance man has also maintained a healthy solo career since the mid-‘90s. Backed by Skull Orchard (a change-up from his previous Ship and Pilot band), Langford released Old Devils in summer 2010. The album presents fully formed Langford’s equal-parts tender, rousing, often humorous, and definitely beery take on rustic American and British folk forms, with a touch of the old punk iconoclasm thrown in as well.
