Jolie Holland's third full-length, The Living and the Dead, is reportedly alive with the spirit of rock and roll. The record finds Holland getting louder, looser, and rowdier--just plain rocking out more--than her earlier albums. Living was produced by Holland and Shahzad Ismaily, a multi-instrumentalist who has composed film scores and played with the likes of Laurie Anderson and Tom Waits, among many others. He also adds plenty of sounds to the album, from Moog synthesizer to duck call. And Ismaily is not the only guest here. The seemingly omnipresent M. Ward lays down some guitar, as does journeyman axsmith Marc Ribot. On closing track "Enjoy Yourself," Holland is joined by her former Be Good Tanyas bandmate Samantha Parton.
