Brooklyn duo Javelin seems destined to be compared to sampler-heavy acts like the Avalanches--and for good reason--No Mas genre-hops with the best of them, cribbing indiscriminately from disco to new wave to funk to r&b. The difference is that Javelin's beats don't come from a record crate, but from a hodgepodge of horns, guitars, homemade thumb pianos and god knows what else. The sounds Javelin creates may sound like a throwback, but they're doing it all by themselves.
