The Rebirth of Detroit represents the third posthumous album from J Dilla, who died in February 2006. Following his death, two albums of new material surfaced. The first was 2006's The Shining, which was actually 75 percent complete at the time of his passing and finished by close friend Karriem Riggins. It was followed in 2009 by Jay Stay Paid, which was mixed by Pete Rock and included 28 unreleased instrumentals. It also featured a slew of rappers, from Blu to Danny Brown to MF DOOM. But for The Rebirth of Detroit, the focus is put squarely on Dilla's hometown as a means of bringing the city back together. At least, that is the intention of his mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, who curated the project. It contains all new material from Dilla.
