Seven words sum up Kiss Kiss Kill Kill, the third album by the Danish psychobillies HorrorPops: “My boot to the middle of your face,” delivered over the familiar Madness “Our House” riff during the second track. The trio comes out swinging, drawing on influences from ska, rockabilly, new wave, and surf rock to hammer down an assured set of pop-punk anthems.

The most obvious presence on Kiss Kiss Kill Kill is lead vocalist and bassist Patricia Day. She is ably backed on guitar by Nekroman and on drums by the similarly mono-appellated Niedermeier, but Day’s voice is the type of singular instrument that dominates with sheer presence. Day employs her vocal talents to full effect throughout the album, from the angry rasp of “Boot to Boot” to the full diva blowout of “Hitchcock Starlet.” Her range never disappoints, and every track (excepting the surf-tinged instrumental “Horror Beach Part 2”) showcases her vocal repertoire within vastly different musical genres.

Kiss Kiss Kill Kill is successful largely because of these experiments. The HorrorPops never fall into repetitive three-chord mashing and predictable punk themes. Other than the psychobilly feel that weaves throughout Nekroman’s solos, the album navigates through most of punk’s various incarnations. The one constant here is inventiveness and energy, driving home a sizzling set of anthemic rowdiness.

I'll probably just stick with the Cramps?

They're not really working much, are they? I'm also a sucker for tough female vocals.

Not much. No. But I'm a sucker for kitschy horror themed albums.
