It’s simple, really: throw together some classic melodic thrash riffs, scream the lyrics in Japanese, and caffeinate the whole thing till it rips by at grindcore speed. While Hayaino Daisuki (translation: “I Love Speed”) aren’t as out there as vocalist Jon Chang’s previous band, the haute-grind trio Discordance Axis, their debut EP, Headbanger’s Karaoke Club Dangerous Fire, feels almost subversive in its lunacy. Chang’s screams are as high-pitched and hilariously bratty as ever, and guitarist Takafumi Matsubara (also in Gridlink with Chang) and drummer Eric Schnee live for velocity, not control. That over-the-top sugar rush is the whole idea, though, and as fourteen minutes of whiplash go, this EP is pretty great. Can grindcore be lovable? Haiyano Daisuki scream “Hai!”
