As reported on Prefix, in 2009 Grizzly Bear was tapped to provide the music for the Blue Valentine soundtrack. The match was appropriate given the band's mastery of dark moods and the film's tone of being the relationship equivalent to Dancer in the Dark. When the film's release date was pushed up the band made the deadline by contributing mostly existing material, alternate takes and instrumentals. In what other job are you allowed to do that? Rounding out the set was a song by Grizzly Bear member Daniel Rossen's band Department of Eagles, an Eccentric Soul nugget (Penny & the Quarters' sweet and dusty "You and Me") and actor Ryan Gosling's rendition of the pop standard "You Always Hurt the Ones You Love."
