With her third album, Goapele describes the switch in her approach to songwriting as more objective and observant as opposed to the raw, reactionary response she would have to the music while writing her first two albums. The Bay Area soul singer has always sounded relaxed and made room for romance on her recordings, but the title track—which also serves as the lead single—is notably sleeker and more seductive than most of her previous work and is one of her few songs to not have natural instrumentation. Jeff Bhasker and Bedrock, who have worked with Goapele in the past, are two of the producers who contributed to Milk & Honey.
