That Georgia Anne Muldrow is one strange lady. On the one hand, her commitment to making quality soul music with live instruments roots her firmly into the genre's rich past. But her progressive (read: highly unusual) way with melody and unorthodox production vaults her light years ahead of the competition. King's Ballad, her fourth album, not counting various collaborative efforts, is being billed as her most "pop" sounding record to date. A dash of conventional songcraft did her good. Her wild streak is by no means tamed, but here it's tethered to a refreshing accessibility. King's Ballad is a G-funk-obsessed slab of summery West Coast funk chock-full of banging beats and poignant guest raps. Oh, and in case you're wondering, the titular "King" is Michael.
