With Gang Starr status up in the air, its record label is attempting to refinance the group's value by offering this greatest-hits compilation. Mass Appeal is somewhat unfortunate, because it pales in comparison to DJ Premier and Guru's 1999 double-disc greatest hits package, Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr.

This single-disc collection included twenty tracks from the duo's six albums, making the compilation an economical primer for new jacks. The group rarely scored mainstream hits, so the track listing reflects a combination of major singles (with the notable exception of "You Know My Steez"), exceptional album tracks ("Soliloquy of Chaos," "Check the Technique"), and rare cuts ("Natural," "Tha Squeeze"). A limited-edition retail version also includes a bonus DVD of eleven of the group's videos, many of which have not been collected together before.
