Although he now calls California home, Freddie Gibbs originally hails from Gary, Ind. And while he doesn't carry the twang of more southern-based MCs, you can still hear his Midwest accent shining through. More prominent, though, is the impact of growing up in one of the United States' most violent cities. Bloggers and critics alike were drawn to Gibbs' blend of weed odes and gangster anthems heard throughout mixtapes such as 2009's excellent midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik. Like some of his more talented contemporaries, he also caught the eye of XXL, which included him as one of its 2010 Freshman list. Str8 Killa, No Filla is his first mixtape since receiving that magazine's accolades and, like his previous efforts, sees Gangsta Gibbs chronicling street life with harsh lyrics and witty punch lines.
