Frank Ocean followed in the footsteps of his Odd Future cohorts MellowHype -- the duo of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain -- in May 2011 when the crew's resident crooner signed with Def Jam to release a proper version of his previously free debut, Nostalgia, Ultra. The difference between his deal and MellowHype's, though, is that BlackenedWhite was their second record and it saw a physical release through Fat Possum. But Def Jam is a proper home for singer-songwriter Ocean, who has the strongest commercial and crossover appeal of all the OFWGKTA acts. He gained some pretty serious radio play with his Tricky Stewart-produced single "Novacane," which the label released through digital retailers.
