By the Throat is the third release from the MC/DJ pair of Eyedea (Mike Averill) and Abilities (Gregory Keltgen). Since their rap battle days (they won Scribble Jam, Rocksteady, and the Blaze Battle in the late '90s) they've been expanding their sonic palette, and this effort is a further evolution from 2004's E&A. Abilities uses sounds ranging from rock'n'roll guitars to his trademark turntable work, and Eyedea's lyrics are as various as ever. In addition to rhyming about loss and addiction, topics as esoteric as neuroscience and quantum physics are addressed.
Terrible album, If I wanted to listen to rock I would buy a decent rock album like A Perfect Circle this is a poor attempt at mixing hip-hop with rock beats... I have no faith left

I can listen and appreciate this as much I've enjoyed face candy, abzorbr & carbon carousel. It's different, at times it's slightly anooying, but what i like about the album and previously mentioned artists and projects is that it conjures a range of emotions in me when listening. I hate it, I've cringed, I've smiled, felt inspired yet even disappointed, but mostly I enjoy the noise and fearless of creating and the mental exercise and opening my mind to something new and different I would otherwise dislike but for some reason have grown to love, it does that more for me than any other catchy sick abilities beat and rap Eyedea has done in the past that gets one mental gears shifting and I just absolutely love it.
Kelly
I have analyzed and listened to hip my entire life (not commercial hip hop, that is pop music with very little artistic value)
The lyrics in this album are second to none, in the history of hip hop. Eyedea's lyrical abilities are obviously very good, but his stories, poetic lyrics and ability to capture a mood and feel in his songs are awesome.
If you like garbage rap that will make it on the radio, listen to Kayne West or Lil Wayne. If you want true art, creativity and expression, listen to Eyedea.
People need to know about him, he turned down millions of dollars from P. Diddy because he didn't want to sell out.
This is one of many underground artists, Sage Francis, P.O.S. who has very successfully created an grunge/hip hop album.

bob is clearly not a hip hop fan. no faith? Eyedea is one of the reasons hip hop is still very much alive. Anyone who thinks that way probably just doesn't appreciate or like creativity or art, and we can conclude bob is definitely not in a creative field with a closed mind like that..... by the way bob, great job analyzing the album. If you analyze it properly, you will not find better lyrics on the planet, and the beats and very modern. If you want boring a@@ unoriginal music, then put MTV on and stop trying to comprehend the complexity of real hip hop which is an art form..
dj caz
dj caz you make one mistake by telling bob to put MTV on and listen to mainstream, the last time MTV played music was when MJ died and before that, I don't even think they have for a LONG time. MTV is a joke and has attracted the morons of life and they do a damn fine job in keeping them there. Now, this album really does show that time away has put no dents in E&A's amazing talent. I have to also agree with Kelly as this album has things that make me want to turn it off, but knowing that the next few seconds can change in a second and make me feel so different about what I was feeling seconds ago is truly one thing that is hard to find these days in any music genre.
Kyle
Poor kid, wouldn't know good hip hop if it grabbed him by the throat.

First off, Eyedea & Abilities' past albums have gotten me, and most definitely many others, through some rough times. I started getting into E&A when they were apart and any sign of them getting back together or going on tour would have made me happy. I must say, however, all the hype about this album led me to believe I was in for a deep hip-hip grunge-y mixture of all kinds of interesting philosophies. The lyrics meet the hype, as expected, but at times the grunge-yness doesn’t seem to work. I respect anything they produce though. Thank god for Rhymesayers!

Bob is an idiot.... now that that is out of the way. Did anybody notice that it says Eyedea's name is Mike Averill? What the shish is up with that? Anybody who is anybody knows his name is Michael Larsen... stupid internet and their wrong information that they're passing out as facts. >= (
Nonsagashus
this album is one of the most intense and lyrically beautiful i have heard in a very, very long time. the pain he expresses is so raw, i don't know how he can sing these without breaking down in tears.
bob, i'm sorry you can't recognize true emotion through song. it's takes a small mind and an even smaller heart to not hear it.
rachel clarity
I have to agree with bob. They should of changed their name if they were going to stray this far. I was hoping to get something to remind me why I loved watching eyedea battle, and hear abilities on the tables. They both still got skill, but not my genre any more.

Yeah I gotta Agree thisis one of the sickest I heard it reminds me alot of the creativity inspired by such artists as CagE,She Wants Revenge,EL-P,Aesop Rock...etc....it's def unique

I agree w/ positive comments. There are two types of bands. First dont develop at all (ACDC). Others walk through genres finding their way(Bestie Boys). I hate AC/DC :D
Zephaniah
Funny about the comments including Aesop Rock, Sage, and blah blah blah considering all of these guys are either with Rhymesayers or Strange Famous, but agreed. I love rock as much as anybody, but today's "rock" is garbage. You have to respect Atmosphere, E & A, Sage, and the like for evolving as artists and evolving the craft itself in the process. It's great to listen to something with substance rather than the garbage you're listening to on the radio bob.

Anyone who speaks negatively about the genius that was Michael Larson exploits their own idiocy. E&A and Larsen's music in general is very unique and is so much better than the uniformed s**t that major artists' spit. You can't fit Larsen in a genre because it CANNOT contain him. Eyedea's opening line from "E&A Day" explains it perfectly "This is a big F**K YOU to anyone out there thats hates us, It ain't my fault you fail to recognize what great is"
Brian
Agreed dj caz. Eyedea was, is, and always will be the spirit of hip hop. A great one was lost, but his legacy is amazing. This bob dude is clearly missing out on the masterpiece this album is! My hero...

RIP Eyedea as for the people that don't like the album. It's simply because of the sell out crap they have been trained to recognize as music. It's not, it's more like a movie, all acters. Most of there lines are even wrote for them, they just perform it or act it out. The point is ignore what they say because our minds are great enough to do that. Besides you can't hate wack rapper ( all main stream) because there such a great source of entertainment. If none of them lacked creativity then you would us bright minds make look stupid in battles.
