Review

Exene Cervenka was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the summer of 2009 but the X co-leader (with John Doe) doesn't stop. The L.A. punkabilly icon showcases her quiet, poetic side on her first solo release in 18 years. The release is more in line with the music veteran's drawing, painting and collage career. Cervenka sings in a more conventional, country-style way, with backing vocalists Cindy Wasserman and Amy Farris (of Dave Alvin’s Guilty Women). Somewhere Gone also features the bass stylings of album engineer, Lou Whitney of The Skeletons. Cervenka co-produces, sings and plays acoustic guitar. She's aided by Jason Edge (acoustic guitar, small amount of percussion) and Farris (violin/viola/cello). Dexter Romweber makes a quick appearance by playing organ and piano on “Surface of the Sun.”
