Estelle's point about the music industry's hypocritical favoritism toward white soul artists should be familiar to even the most race-illiterate person. And while I'm certain that a survey measuring the average amount of resources allotted to white and black artists by major labels would reveal a discrepancy similar to the findings of the last few annual National Urban League State of Black America studies, perhaps another fruitful conversation would focus on the "qualities of quality" (full nod to Project Zero). In a democracy, there should be room for all the different types of cream to rise to the top, right? So, if you want your welterweight soul-jack pop, drink Duffy. Need a coffee-shop folk-pop fix, then kick back with Adele. If you want some glamorous, messy soul, Estelle's your woman. Oh, FYI, John Legend, Kanye, will.i.am and Mark Ronson are all over this joint.
