Abstract

Many more people probably know the name Perry Ferrell then know the name Eric Avery, which is unfair, since Avery co-founded Jane’s Addiction with Ferrell. Since those hazy ‘80s days, Avery has gone on to lead the band Polar Bear and play with the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morisette, Peter Murphy, and Garbage. That last band’s lead singer, Shirley Manson, makes a guest appearance on Help Wanted, Avery’s first true solo album. So do Flea (playing trumpet, not bass) and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Of Help Wanted’s thirteen mostly gloomy, introspective tracks, three are subtitled “The Man Who Could Fly.”

This is truly a jewel of an album buried in the midst of all the monotony and insipid music being played and sold this year. This is not a Janes album by any means. It has its own unique beautiful original sonic identity. Once you hear it once, you want to play it again and again. Like finding a new amusement ride park, you are excited to go back and experience the thrill and joy over and over. Each listen you find it more intriguing and fascinating. If your musical taste walks a different path than the mainstream, I think you will really enjoy this album
