Matthew Cooper has, until now, created purely ambient music under the moniker Eluvium. Since 2003 he has released four critically acclaimed albums of beatless space music, which makes a move toward the verse-chorus-verse format a surprising decision. This is what he does on Similes, which is his first record to feature live percussion and vocals. And he doesn't cop out with any Hopelandic cooing and mumbling. This is actual singing—leaning toward an Ian Curtis monotone, but that's to be expected and hardly a criticism. Cooper recorded Similes solo, as usual, in his Watership Sounds studio in Portland, Oregon.
