Review

British singer/songwriter Ed Harcourt, who has never exactly been known for his bright and sunny outlook on life, has described his fifth album, Lustre, as "life-affirming," so that's got to count for something. Of course, bright and sunny is a given in the melody department for the man who grew up with a deep love for '60s British Invasion pop, an influence he's blended with folk and alt sounds for some time. Assisting in the blending this time around will be co-producer Ryan Hadlock (The Gossip, Blonde Redhead), and Harcourt's wife and her sisters even make a guest appearance in their guise as The Langley Sisters, adding three-part harmonies to all this life-celebrating business.

Recorded at Bear Creek Studio, with co-producer Ryan Hadlock [Blonde Redhead, The Gossip], Ed's first studio album in four years is a dazzling statement of intent and rejuvenation from the singer / songwriter who hasn't always received the acclaim his gifts deserve. Now a proud father and a much-in-demand writer / producer, he's delivered a set of songs about birth, love, light and darkness which glistens with genius. From the opening euphoria of 'Lustre' to the lupine howl of 'Heart Of A Wolf', from the sunny yet subversive Beach Boys pop of 'Do As I Say Not As I Do' to the beautiful truths of 'Fears Of A Father', this feels like the finest Ed Harcourt album yet.
