Over a decade has gone by since Brown University graduate Sheik overtook the pop charts with “Barely Breathing.” Since then, he’s become best known as the composer of the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit “Spring Awakening,” and “Whisper House” takes a giant step further in this direction, since it’s the soundtrack to a musical that has Sheik writing both words and music. Despite the bare-bones acoustic setting and ever-pervasive Nick Drake influence, Sheik comes through with a cache of catchy tunes and even throws in some witty lyrics to boot. Newcomer Holly Brook brightens the tone of songs like “It’s Better to Be Dead” with engaging harmonies. For full enjoyment (and a complete understanding of the aforementioned title’s significance) research the play before playing the CD.
I saw Duncan Sheik play two nights ago in Wilmington, Delaware and about half of his set was performing new Whisper House songs. He had full band (bass, lead guitar Gerry Leonard, clarinet/french horn/cello, drums and piano) and the girl playing piano also sang. Performance was amazing. The new songs are already in my head and I only heard them once. Unfortunately I didn't have $5 cash on me to buy the new EP. Can't wait for this one to come out in January!

You are a lucky guy Steve Y.
I never saw Duncan Sheik live.
And I do not think I will ever, because I live in The Netherlands.
Looking forward in hearing his new cd.
