Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches, began popping up on music critics radars with the release of a split 7-inch and double-single in 2010. His combination of rockabilly, surfer haze, and noisy melodies became an increasingly intriguing mixture of styles, which he's full realized here on Badlands. The album represents the proper debut from the Taiwan-born, Canada-based artist who's definitely got a stoner-Elvis thing going on here.
