The third album by the Providence, Rhode Island indie folk rock band is touted to be a very personal effort by lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. In fact, the songs "Goodbye, Dear Friend" and "Christ Jesus" will feature McCauley alone at the piano. The band has also recorded a new version of "Christ Jesus," which also appeared on their second CD, War Elephant. The group has also purportedly recorded darker material for this effort that tackles subjects like death, mortality, the existence of God. The Black Dirt Sessions was recorded at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York and features new guitarist Ian O'Neil (of Titus Andronicus) who replaced Andy Tobiassen.
