Cursive

Mama, I’m Swollen

Release Date: March 10, 2009
Label: Saddle Creek

Abstract

Since their roughly emo beginnings, Cursive's nature has been one of progress. Never particularly adept at sticking to genre specifics, they've traversed that vast Indie underworld armed first with thrashing riffs, then glorious strings and dissonant brass. Their trajectory over their last two albums (2003's The Ugly Organ and 2006's Happy Hollow) has been one of dramatic irony and clever prose, but not without the sinking sadness of personal anguish. Cursive have all but perfected the blending of the meta and the melodrama, and come away with a sound that is surprisingly unique. Mama, I'm Swollen (the band's sixth release on Saddle Creek Records and their first release in three years) looks to continue this method, and keep Cursive ever moving forward.

*sigh*
What can i say about Cursive's new release "Mama, I'm Swollen"? It's not their worst...that's a start.

The album opens with the very forgettable "In The Now"...and that's how the album continues. Forgettable.

There are a few tracks (see "from the hips") that would fit in much better with Kasher's side project, "The Good Life" and there are a few catchy guitar lines that almost scream genious but never quite get there.

The last song, "what have i done?" is actually one of the better songs and i wish it was the first song on the album. It is about how now that he's grown up and happy, he has nothing to write about...and he let what he thought was his worst years go by him.

That's what this album SHOULD have been about: an aging songwriter past his prime...because that's what he is. Kasher is MUCH better at examining himself and his relationships than he is the outside world. If he continued that theme then i think it could have been a much more inspired album.

The album is sparatic. Doesn't flow from start to finish. And is uninspired...Kind of like this review.

What Cursive really needs is a producer to keep them on track and help shape the album. Because the flow is just awful and the songs are some of the most uninspired i've heard in years.

4/10
Better than happy hollow...but not by much.

Good try Kasher...You'll get 'em next time...

hmmm.. I actually enjoy this album more than Happy Hollow.. It's no Domestica or Ugly Organ or ...Starving Eyes, but I didn't expect it to be. Sometimes change is good, and Cursive has changed as much as I have.

I like the new album. I had to listen to it 3 or 4 times before i did, but i like it a lot now. Track 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 are the best in my opinion. Those are all awesome. The last track is definately where it should be, but that's not saying the first track is any good. It's a total outtro and the first comment is idiodic. It kinda reminds me of a staying alive outtro. Overall, its a good album. There are some parts that make me cringe(vocal solo on Donkeys), but at the same time I love them, because its unique. The guy at the top is way exaggerating. Cursive is just doing what they do every album, which is adjusting their style. Domestica was very raw and harsh. The Ugly organ was very dark and at the same time sarcastic. Happy Hollow was catchier that the others. This album is just a lot different, i don't know what to say about it.

I couldn't get into it the first listen but it was the same with Happy Hollow so I let myself listen to it a few times before forming an opinion. It's pretty good though. I still want a few more spins though

Like all of Cursive's music, it's album that grows on you. Whether you were disappointed or thought it was meh alright, a couple more curious listens and you'll find being pulled more into the story and more appreciative of the music. because I'm sure we can all honestly say that one of the main reasons we listen to Cursive is to hear a cleverly weaved innovative musical story, something of significance we can relate to our own lives. and these feelings of disappointment may come because of sheer anticipation. Again, Cursive grows on you over time...

btw im still not sure yet where this falls into as one of their great feats but I'm sure it wont beat their current masterpiece The Ugly Organ.
I know alot of people are pissed cause they think Happy Hollow was such a drastic change in musical style, buuutt it was a different type of story, one thats meant to be interpreted as something visual and multi dimensional, a small "odd lot" town that you could explore through guidance of kasher's individual stories and points of view on religion. Yeah im rambling about a different album now but i felt i needed to clear that up cause it annoyed me that people didnt like Happy Hollow

I really dig this album. I agree the first song is very forgettable but beyond that I enjoy the lyrical concept that he expands on from song to song.

If you can't be emo about a relationship you can alway go another way, be emo about the human drama: When do we die, why do we realize we exist, why are we different from animals.
Anyway just wanted to throw a more positive review out there, Good songs, I love the flow, and some great organ sounds

Give it a listen
