Cobra Starship

Hot Mess

Release Date: August 11, 2009
Label: Atlantic

Abstract

Naming your third studio album Hot Mess is a pretty bold thing to do, especially when your band's name immediately recalls 80s travesty Jefferson Starship, and the starlet featured on your new album's first single was allegedly filmed giving some dude a footjob (on a track called "Good Girls Go Bad," nonetheless). Another album track is called "Pete Wentz Is the Only Reason Why We're Famous," so it's probably safe to assume that this isn't something the band is really taking too seriously.

Track list

Disc 1
1 Nice Guys Finish Last
2 Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous
3 Good Girls Go Bad (featuring Leighton Meester)

Wow, that's a wonderful review of the album. I suppose that's why you've titled your article "Abstract". You're analyzing the name of the album, the names of the songs, and the actress in their video. You've just failed at a successful album review. Next time listen to the music, or don't bore us all with your dipsh*t observations. It isn't an album review if you're not reviewing the music. It's probably safe to assume that this article isn't something that you've really taken too seriously.

10.0 out of 10

disappointed in this very closed-minded and under-researched review, mr richardson. i understand if you do not like the genre of music they play, but if youre going to review them then at least take a listen, rather than ASSuming that they dont take their music seriously. first, their name came from two words Gabe Saporta (lead singer) saw on his vintage jackets being "cobra" and "starship". second, the song is "pete wentz is the only reason we're famous", there is no "why" in that title. research please. and third, it has nothing to do with them not being serious. they were on tour with fall out boy, who pete wentz is a member of. pete wentz helped them create one of their first singles for the movie "snakes on a plane", so he did indeed help them reach their current level. and it is just in the fun nature of the band to title a song as such. owned.

your review of the album blows, and your writing is even worse. don't quit your day job matthew richardson...and if by some infinitesimal chance this actually IS your day job? well.. youre effed. good day.

How would they know if its good or not, Matthew Richardson. Go die or something. We don't want your crap about Cobra.

July 21, 2009 at 11:12 a.m.

Cobra Starship is my favorite band and I have loved them since their first album, so I know them pretty well. They don't take things to seriously and they just want to have fun. You may not get their sense of humor but this is going to be an amazing album. Also, Leighton Meester is known for being an amazing actress on a top rated show, not for giving some guy a footjob. So I'm sorry, but I do not think you have a right to judge their album or their music.

July 29, 2009 at 11:48 a.m.

Really, you call that a review. How is the music? Here's a quote from a real reviewer: Hot Mess is a really great album. It's definitely a leap forward for the band. It's smart and funny and fun. Yet, because Cobra Starship made it, the album probably won't be embraced by the music-journo community that would probably love it if they gave it a chance. That's a shame, but it's sort of inevitable.

July 30, 2009 at 8:05 a.m.

Ok Matthew if that is ur real name u got no idea mat ur talkin about cos they are taking it seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carnt wait till the album comes out!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and there is no "why" in pete wentz is the only reason WERE famous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 30, 2009 at 12:05 p.m.

Really? _Really_?

I was astounded when I read this. How could anyone hate Cobra Starship? Mr. Richardson obviously knows nothing about this band. If you've ever bothered to read Gabe Saporta's "backstory," you'd know his mission...and that this band isn't serious. There are plenty of serious bands out there, but Cobra is a unique neon splash that smears itself all over everyone going "HEY GUYS. WORLD'S ENDING, MAKE THE BEST OF IT." Frankly they have the right idea, people today are way too sensitive about everything, and Cobra is a serious breath of fresh air. The band puts out amazing CDs, is phenomenal live, and they're genuinely nice and really care about their fans. Isn't that what a good band _should_ do? Are names seriously that important, Mr. Richardson? What should matter is they make amazing music and we love them because they love us. They'd never stick out with a boring name, but Cobra Starship makes you do a double-take and go "wtf?"
And c'mon, they sang about transvestites. That's just seriously amazing, nobody else wants to get NEAR that topic in today's oversensitive society.
Fangs up!! Papi, Ryland, Alex, Nate, V, you guys are my absolute favorite, your music has seriously impacted me. I can't wait for this new album. Bring it!

July 31, 2009 at 3:02 a.m.

cobra rocks. ******** mr. richardson, your just some old **** who doesn't give a **** about their music & probably has never listened to any of their songs. oh and that was ***** move, judging their ENTIRE album on the name of ONE song ???!!! can't wait for the awesome new album !!! x)

Perhaps you should actually review the music and not the choice in titles. Also look up irony in the dictionary.

The whole point of Cobra Starship is to be wacky. Not to be serious. Can't wait for the album. I've already made a deal with the 'rents for them to buy it for me. :]

August 14, 2009 at 7:52 p.m.

Okie,so who CARES if they are seriouse?! thats not really the piont to be seriouse all the time, cobra probably didnt intend to be like tht! doii...but they are soo phenominal!! (: haa, fangs up 4 life niggs! this cd is beaast! :D ohh! && p.s. gabe is realllly cute ! :D

August 17, 2009 at 3:21 p.m.

I have learned that most bands don't become serious until AFTER they stop doing what the do for the hell of it. I'm not going to get angry at you because you didn't do your job right, but I will make snide comments. The name history shouldn't matter because history doesn't play loudly, the band does. And if Leighton wants to give some guy a footjob, so be it. Dearest Matthew, listen to their albums and you should be able to acknowledge why we stand up for Cobra.

August 18, 2009 at 2:07 a.m.

The name comes from a leather jacket that Gabe Saporta (vocals) wore when he was in his old band Midtown. The tag on the inside said "Cobra Starship."
And if you ever ACTUALLY listen to what the band says, they don't care what people think, they make music they love, and there is a meaning behind the title and lyrics to their songs.
Pete Wentz, is in fact, the reason they are famous, because he is the one that got them signed, and hey, if they want to dedicate a song to them, then so be it.
Don't judge a band by the cover of their album, the names of their songs, or the videos, but judge them by the music they make.

August 18, 2009 at 2 p.m.

if you had listened to the music maybe you wouldn't have been sooooooooo close-minded. do judge them by the cover or even the album's name if you were actually interested in your job, start actually listening to the music and don't say all this crap about the title of their albums or videos. they make good music.......you should try it one day.....

August 29, 2009 at 5:03 p.m.

I have absolutely fallen in love with this band they are amazing... hands down, no question! Got to see them in concert in April killer show may I add! Btw the whole Pete Wentz thing... they're on his record label. Nothing but love for this band! FANGS UP!!!
