"Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp (vocals, synths) and Will Gregory (synths)," read the liner notes on Black Cherry. Don't say they didn't warn you. Prepare yourself for lots of squelch, filters, pitch-bending, etc.; everything is engineered here. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but a slew of trippy sounds does not a masterpiece make. The album revolves around relationships and sex, but it's more of the impersonal, S&M/bondage variety. The dreamy "Hairy Trees" is a wallowing journey to sensual bliss, but even the slower tunes come off more like sex with a robot or something. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
