Cave In's major-label gambit backfired. When 2003's Antenna, an early post-Radiohead meaningfulcore milestone, didn't sell as well as then-label RCA Records expected, the band somehow managed to worm their way out of their contract with finances and integrity thankfully intact. Cave In subsequently returned to both their metal-inflected roots and their original label, Hydra Head Records, for follow-up Perfect Pitch Black. Just when things appeared to be back on track for the Methuen, Mass., outfit, the band announced an extended hiatus. After three years of intermittent squabbles and various solo ventures, Cave In has finally reconvened. Planets of Old, their blistering new EP, pairs them with producer Paul Kolderie, best known for studio work with Radiohead, Hole, the Pixies and countless others.
