Vs. Children, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s fifth proper full-length, sees Owen Ashworth putting away the keyboards to focus more on piano, organ, and acoustic percussion. A consistent theme of the record is criminality—apparently, a former co-worker of Ashworth’s had been arrested for holding up 26 banks prior to the recording of the album (see “Apprehended at Ace Hardware in Libertyville, IL”). And, as the title suggests, many of the songs are also about children, pregnancy, and parent/child relationships. Don’t be too alarmed by the heavy subject matter, though. Even though this is the product of a more mature Casiotone, it’s still presented with the same intimacy of his earlier recordings.
