Broken Spindles is Joel Petersen, best known as the bassist of the Faint (Conor Oberst’s old band) and a remixer on tracks by Of Montreal and AFI. On his solo debut, he moves into musical territory that’s more artsy than punk, layering on programmed live drums, electronic bass and lots of keyboards. Lyrically, he also waxes a lot more pensive and introspective than the work by his main band would lead you to think. The song titles alone describe the lyrical angle Peterson takes; examples: “Introvert,” “I've Never Been This Afraid” “You’re Happy But Not For Long.”
