Featuring not only Will Carruthers of Spaceman 3 on bass, but the full-time return of guitarist/ songwriter Matt Hollywood- he penned the stinging “Not if You Were the Last Dandy on Earth”- into the fold as well, the Brian Jonestown Massacre (aka: whomever Anton Newcombe is currently touring with) are following up the so-so shoegazed sprawl of 2008’s My Bloody Underground with the equally well-titled Who Killed Sergeant Pepper?. And for those who know the band only as ‘60s rock/ ‘80s shoegaze revivalists, or as the head-kicking hedonists of DiG!, this may be the album that dispels you of such notions- recorded in Iceland and Berlin, the new disc spins from ambient electronica beats, moody Bhangra folk, thrashy rock and eastern-tinged psychedelia. And that’s just the first two tracks. Who Killed may not really reveal who murdered Sgt. Pepper, but it just might reanimate the BJM’s career.
Dude is kind of a jerk, but he's extremely talented. Can't wait to hear the record.
