In 2008, the San Francisco International Film Festival approached Pixies leader Frank Black, a.k.a. Black Francis, about composing a score for the 1920 German expressionist film The Golem. This request drove Black into San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios, where he cut a double album's worth of material in a stunningly prolific few days with producer/keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman, bassist Joseph Pope, drummer Jason Carter, horn player Ralph Carney, and since-deceased lead guitarist Duane Jarvis. Following a live performance of the score at the film festival, the project sat unreleased until early 2010, when it was sold in extremely limited quantities through Black Francis' web store. This release of The Golem Rock Album consists of selections from the original double album. Copies of it ordered through Black Francis' web store and Amazon.com include a DVD of the complete work.
