Rough Travel for a Rare Thing is the first full-length live release and 15th overall from deep-voiced singer-songwriter Bill Callahan, who recorded under the monikers Smog and (Smog) before switching to his given name in 2007. The album features 11 of Callahan’s darkly ruminative, poignant songs, ranging from the gentle trot of “Our Anniversary” to the propulsive giddy-up of “The Well.” The arrangements mostly match the sturdy twang of the 2005 Smog LP, A River Ain’t Too Much To Love, employing lots of acoustic guitar and violin solos.
