Jack Kerouac's nephew, Jim Sampas, originally conceived of the soundtrack for his new documentary about the author as a collaborative effort of many musicians. The end product ended up being a collaboration, but on a much smaller scale than he intended. Son Volt's Jay Farrar and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard took the project and made it their own, even though they had never met previous to the sessions. On One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur, Farrar takes passages from Kerouac's famously dark novel and sets them to music. Farrar and Gibbard split vocal duties on the record, and were accompanied by Son Volt's Mark Spencer.
