For over twenty years, Autechre have been so far ahead of the game that any attempt to pin them down with a genre—electro, techno, IDM—is ludicrous. They can't even be defined within the context of their own work, as they're constantly progressing beyond themselves with each release. So when they announce a new album, people get excited to the point of zealotry. Such is the case with Oversteps, their tenth album. It will be released on their long-time label Warp, and the track list is predictably wonky. Members Sean Booth and Rob Brown have kept quiet about any possible surprises, but expect nothing short of a reinvention.
