Atmosphere
When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
Label: Rhymesayers Entertainment
Hip-hop group Atmosphere arrived at the right time in the late '90s. The duo of Ant and Slug perfected the ironic smile, particularly on 2002's God Loves Ugly, which disected and scrutinized the mendacity and mundaneness of everyday (Midwestern) life. Subsequently, a constant theme has been the artifice of appearances. For their sixth record they have made literal that familiar adage about judging by a book's cover: Stans need apply to the limited edition of When Life..., which is packaged as a hardcover book and includes an illustrated story written by Slug and a DVD of live footage.

what happenend to atmosphere i want stuff like overcast and lucy ford the past few have been garbage |

what do you people want, the same exact album redone 50 times, one of the things I love about atmosphere is every album they put out they devolop as musicians and make each album really have its own sound. this album is brilliant. I love overcast, god loves ugly, lucy ford, sevens travel, all there old sad clown series stuff, but seriously give up on them sounding like overcast, one if they still did stuff like overcast still you prob would've never heard of them, two with this album they took the same old great storytelling and made it catchier than any of there old stuff. I think it's the best of both worlds, catchy & lyrical. It's just solid, well thought out music. I love lyrical stuff like overcast but come on they are doing this for a living they need to appeal to the masses to keep the paycheck coming and I rather have music like this doing that than some soulja boy garbage. |

I respect when the artist grows(even if the so called fans can't dig the change)its imperative to take these dives......Slug is a poet first.....I guess he does it for him off the bat, not for the masses. I like the little tales inbetween kind of like lil tortured fables, hey they said the same of Bukowski and Waits....not sayin Slug is there yet, but I feel it... and my head is still boppin'! |

this album is not good. its made for 18 year old girls ... if you want tortured lil fabels listen to aesop rock .... he blew up , and made a sick album , atmosphere did the opposite ... dont get me wrong , atmosphere basically turned me on to hip hop , about 8 years ago .... so i still love em for that , but just because they are indie hip hop ledgends doesnt give them a pass to put out wack sh*t..... |

Wack? If you just got put on to hip hop in 2000, do you even know what wack is? While Atmosphere may not be everyone's cup of tea, they are definitely not wack, nor is this album. The definition of wack would be something approximating horrible lyrics, bad beats, and essentially music that has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Something like Soulja Boy, Master P, Cash Money Millionaires, Flo Rida, etc. I'm a soon-to-be 30 year-old who's been listening to hip hop for 20+ years. Atmosphere isn't the best to do it, but they certainly make great music that deserves a true hip hop head's (or just a good music fan's) respect. Hate on Slug for rhyming about everyday s**t like addiction, homelessness, impressionable children, etc. if you want. Hate on Ant for expanding his musical horizons with each album if you want. When you're done hating, make sure you realize that you would be dissing them if they made Overcast again because it's the same album. The fact is that no one makes a perfect album. You have to try new things. Otherwise, you'll grow stale. If I may paraphrase someone (I don't remember who)... "To cater to an audience's taste doesn't respect them. If the audience doesn't respect that, they don't reserve respect." Give the album a few more listens and then re-evaluate. If you don't like it then, fine. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But, there's no way you can call it wack. |

Its Pretty Bad. Lets not get that underground elitist mentality and swear that underground hip hop is the |

Did anyone say anything about underground vs. mainstream? Your incomplete statement, Chris, doesn't make sense. The only thing I see is Ray's mention of Flo Rida, Cash Money, etc. That has nothing to do with underground or mainstream. Quite plainly, Flo Rida is awful. And he would be so no matter what, whether he was underground or mainstream. |

Wow...I really dont understand som ppl. i've been listening to hip hop for 15 yrs. now at least....Atmosphere has been one of the most original groups ive come across. I was at their concert just recently in Chicago..They painted my city gold...Rocked some old hits played some of the new music, and it was a fantastic show. When i showed up at the metro Ant was out front smokin a cig BSin whith fans, hanging out...slug shook hands with everyone waitin in line handing out flyers and takin pics with fans and signing autographs...despite their success, they're still the same guys, out there making music that they feel and love..bringing the crowd into the show.. Say what you want about the new album, I LOVE IT, they put out stricktly leakage, to give you that havin fun head boppin party music, before they focused on Paint that sh*t gold.. Its a differnt sound but if you appreciate music and listen to the album its some good sh*t..bottom line. |

you guys are stupid if you think this CD sucks. its something different than they're used to doing and its bad ass, is more lo key. that sh!t they play on the radio is garbage. u have no idea what good music is when u hear it. |

Atmosphere's WLGYLYPTSG, is relevent, urgent, ominous and brutally honest. It is unlike anything else droppin' in record stores this week and stands alone as a pillar in the Hip-Hop community. |

All of you so called fans of Atmosphere...you damn fakes. talkin ohh i love atmosphere but his new album sucks. f*ck that and f*ck you. listen to Joe Commisso he knows his sh*t. Listen to Ray. True fans right there. F*ck you colin. his album is for 18 year old girls?? where the hell did you get that??? Listen to Aaron too. You fags wouldnt know what hip-hop is if slapped you in the f*ck*n face. When life hands you lemons, you paint that sh*t gold is totally different from overcast! and lucy ford and all that. Thats his point! he meant to do that. he's switchin his style up and thats what obviously keeps people listening. He also doesnt give a damn about the haters out there. He makes his music based on his own feelings of how it sounds. not how he thinks other people feel about it. he doesnt give a rats ass who doesnt like a piece of his music. So to all you dissin on his new album, fresh up on your hip-hop and learn to appreciate. dumb a**holes. To Joe, Aaron, and Ray: Thank you for being true fans. Atmosphere is a top-notch rapper. |

For all of those out there who don’t like the album read this (I’m not going to hate, promise)! To fully appreciate this album you have to listen to Sad Clown Bad: Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring and to Strictly Leakage (SL). Atmosphere knew that not everyone would be ready for the sound of the new album. Its style is too different from anything they have done. So they released the 4 Sad Clowns and the SL to get people ready for the new sound. Complete brilliance. Still not convinced? Slug has already addressed his critics, back on God Love Ugly he says, “Switch up my styles they all complain, but see which kids next year sound the same as me!” |

i think if you collectively compare the records that are out this and last year, (corrine bailey rae, feist, sia, etc.) from a production standpoint its not that good. My guess is that it fades away in a couple years. Did anyone feel how short Imagine had an effect on people? But give it some time. The reason everyone goes back to the old records is because they stood the test of time and thats really what makes a good record. |

This is a very solid album. List albums that have come out this year that are better than this. I prefer it over the Roots - Rising Down album, and that says alot. |

i can see how people who AREN'T atmosphere fans might not like this album...but the true fans already know what atmosphere has acomplished and they can relate to it, whether it hits home perfectly or have to broaden their horizons a bit. why the f*ck do you listen to music if it doesn't progress your mind anyway? |

truely unbiased here : it was wonderful if you enjoy atmosphere. it wasnt their greatest, but it was still great. i enjoyed it alot and so do many other people. it was very heartfelt, you can tell that they put their all into their music, i respect that. this music is real. sevens travels is my favorite, and these two are quite different, but still a good album. |
