Angela Desveaux

Mighty Ship

Release Date: September 9, 2008
Label: Thrill Jockey

Abstract

Angela Desveaux's music is highly influenced by her Canadian heritage. She hails from the hamlet of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, where British and French musical traditions meet and meld. The name of her new album, The Mighty Ship, comes from a traditional folk song about the Titanic and also pays homage to her grandmother, who has long been a source of support for Desveaux. On the more cosmopolitan side, Desveaux has also spent time in the hip music scene of Montreal, where she recorded her debut album, 2006's Wandering Eyes, with the Arcade Fire's Howard Bilerman. He's replaced on Mighty Ship by Dave Draves, who has worked with Kathleen Edwards and Howe Gelb. Desveaux is again joined on guitar and harmony vocals by Mike Feuerstack, who also plays in the band Wooden Stars. Mighty Ship is tipped to be a more rocking affair than Wandering Eyes, more Chrissy Hynde than Gillian Welch.
