After following up the knotty, epic rock reverence of Source Tags & Codes with such lifeless, studio-slicked meticulousness as So Divded and World Apart (somewhere in there are two puns related those albums’ lack of connection to the fervor and brilliance of Source Tags, but I’ll let you work ‘em out), …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead returns with an album knee-deep in the meat-blood carnage of visceral and exciting rock ‘n roll. Abandoning the heavy-handed and overused overdubs that plagued their two previous releases, …And You Will Know Us have crafted a record recorded live in the studio, forcing the band away from the cold studio reliance that could’ve made them Yes’ second coming and towards a furiously brutal—yet still highly orchestrated, composed, and even, at times, graceful—piece of music that, while not quite the masterwork that was Source Tags, can stand proudly as that album’s successor.
