Pretend you can't hear the silly movie samples on 7000 Dying Rats' third album, Season in Hell. Pretend you didn't notice the ironic song titles like "Balls of Bigotry," "Jesus Farted" and "Your Studied Indifference Is Duly Noted." Pretend that there isn't a single tongue-in-cheek foray into cock-rock or white-boy hip-hop, and that the band didn't record a version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" for sequencer and banjo. Now whaddaya got? A pretty decent grindcore album. This rotating collective of ski-mask-wearing metal pranksters (currently featuring members of Lair of the Minotaur, Flying Luttenbachers and xBxRx) may not take themselves seriously, but unlike their joke-metal brethren in Anal Cunt or Gwar, the members of 7000 Dying Rats occasionally pull out a track whose quality extends beyond the title. And speaking of which, here's another beauty: "We Had 'Dying' in Our Name Way Before All Those Metalcore Cocksuckers Came Along."
