Universal Pulse is 311's tenth studio release. The Los Angeles-via-Omaha, Nebraska reggae rockers reteamed with Uplifter producer Bob Rock (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, The Offspring). Universal Pulse has only eight tracks and no b-sides, making it the band's shortest record to date. Previous efforts saw the band's record label requested that drums be recorded at an alternate location, but all of Universal Pulse's tracks, including the drums, were recorded at 311's Hive Studio. Guitarist/vocalist Nick Hexum noted that the record is more "focused" and posses a heavier, distorted aesthetic.
