Warpaint loves their work. That point is obvious, and cannot be misinterpreted. Despite some less than ideal sound, that didn't stop them from cavorting about on stage, behind their sensual blend of post-punk, minimalist guitars (courtesy of Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman) and slinky dub feel (thank you, Jennie Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa). The end of "Bees" found Kokal rapidly spinning about like an Olympian.
Not counting their appearance at the Spring edition of Boston Calling, the quartet hadn't played a full set in town since 2011 and they took advantage of fleshing out their tightened festival set with some extras off their self-titled 2LP set from this year and a sprinkling of earlier songs. "CC" is a recent addition, and features Lindberg taking main vocals; maybe it's my ear punishment, maybe it's a testament to how well they blend their sounds, but it's impossible for me to differentiate between who is singing at any particular time. Wayman's and Kokal's guitar styles are also similar, not wasting a single note and getting right to the point; John McGeoch is smiling somewhere. Though there were highs with "Intro" straight into "Keep It Healthy" as per the record, and the seductive tug of "Undertow," the piercing, gleaming moment was the frisson of "Burgundy" into "Krimson," especially punctuated with Mozgawa's steady cymbal work steadily transitioning and crashing into the frenetic pace of "Krimson." Goosebump material.
Guy Blakeslee originally made his mark via The Entrance Band, but as bass player Paz Lenchantin is now pulling fulltime duty as a Pixie, he's gone the complete solo route. The modern version, anyway, where a laptop and pedal board can add texture and fill, instead of sitting on an accordian and having a tambourine duct-taped to one foot. The interlude of rain sounds helped keep some momentum that ebbed during the delay of tuning between songs, and he did a couple of straight up a cappela songs, eyes shut tight and immersed in the moment.
