They’re nothing if not scrupulous. NME reports that Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top turned down $1 million dollars to shave their beards (drummer Frank Beard, of course, is the only one not to sport one).
The offer came from Gillette in 1984, presumably to be used in an advertisement for the razor company. Adjusted for inflation, that cool million would be worth an even cooler $2.25 million today.
But Gibbons wasn’t having it. He’s been sporting the look since the early days of the band, stating “No dice. Even adjusted for inflation, this isn’t going to fly. The prospect of seeing oneself in the mirror clean-shaven is too close to a Vincent Price film…a prospect not to be contemplated, no matter the compensation.”
Wonder if they’ve trademarked their unique look, a la Anthony Davis and his unibrow.
