In the rush to dress and photograph pets for their seasonal card picture, find the perfect theme sweater, and swig as much eggnog as possible in the two-week window of social acceptability, it's possible some music-industry news may have slipped by you. While the 21 percent drop in music sales (that includes a doubling of digital sales) and the continued job cuts at EMI weren't a big secret, the impact of Amazon's addition of the Warner catalog snuck up on pretty much everybody. A DRM-free music store that works with any type of music player is yet another chink in the colossus that it is Apple. I'm all for choices, but I think calling this year the "rise of the Zune" is a bit of a stretch. I also don't quite understand why that's the headline of this article, seems to be the least interesting bit and kinda crammed in here.
