The supposed death of the Zune might have just been a ploy to get Steve “Zune Tattoo Guy” Smith to leave them alone. Once the mustachioed fanboy had confirmed his purchase of an iPod Touch, Microsoft dropped news that they were seeking exclusive video content to lure customers back to the Zune. The company tried a variation on this strategy earlier this year, when it uploaded exclusive videos from series such as NBC’s Heroes to the Zune Marketplace. Though this strategy didn’t cause a sea change in the market, the new attack point is that the content would take advantage of the Zune’s networking capabilities. The information is still very sketchy at this point, but at the very least Microsoft is seeking to exploit one of the iPod’s few weaknesses [Gizmodo]
