Frank Zappa has joined Emiliano Zapata and Fu Manchu as men defined by their facial follicles. Gail Zappa has filed a lawsuit in a German court, claiming that the founders of the Zappanale Festival do not have proper authorization to use her deceased husband’s name or trademark mustache. In addition to monetary damages, Zappa is seeking the removal of a statue of her deceased husband from Bad Doberan, Germany, the location of the festival, and the cessation of use of the festival’s logo, which features Frank Zappa’s facial hair. Zappanale has been in existence since 1990, and has grown to be one of the largest celebrations of Frank Zappa’s music worldwide. A collection of Zappa fans has taken to the Internet with a petition to ask Zappa to cease the lawsuit and has thus far garnered over two thousand signatures. Should Zappa choose to proceed, a court in Dusseldorf will hear the case in the next few months. [Guardian U.K. via The Daily Swarm]
