2012 begins much like 2011 did: With a singer running for president of his tumultuous home country. Last year it was Wyclef, this year it’s Youssou N’Dour, the renowned African singer, who ended months of speculation and officially announced plans to run for president of Senegal. N’Dour is the most famous musician in Senegal, which should help him take on current president Abdoulaye Wade, who is running for an unprecedented third term as president, which is frowned upon in Senegal. This has caused a lot of opposition to Wade, and N’Dour is betteing he has a shot to win the presidency.
Unlike Wyclef, he’s actually allowed to run though, since he lives there. I’m not knowledgeable enough to say whether or not N’Dour has a shot, but it’d be crazy if he won. [DS]
