"You Light Up My Life" composer allegedly used Craigslist in sex attacks

Joe Brooks, the composer of "You Light Up My Life (he's in the video above performing the song with Patti Smith in 1979), is the leading suspect in five sexual assaults, and allegedly used Craigslist to lure women to his Upper East Side apartment.

Police say that Brooks played up his Hollywood connections to get aspiring models and actresses to come to his apartment, where he forced himself on them. The 70-year-old director made most of his money on jingles for Pepsi and Geritrol, and is the main suspect in two rapes, a sodomy case, and two sexual assaults. Two victims reported being doped with date rape drugs, and other believe their drinks were spiked.

Brooks and his attorney are currently in negotiations with Manhattan prosecutors for Brooks to talk to the cases' investigators. The first case allegedly happened in November 2006, another in 2007, and three more in March 2008. Brooks suffered a debilitating stroke about six months ago. [NY Daily News via Daily Swarm]
