Yann Tiersen Shares “A Midsummer Evening”

Yann Tiersen recently released three videos to tease his new LP — his first since 2011’s Skyline — with it’s impossible to search title ∞(Infinity). Now the  Brittany-born French artist is giving us the first full taste of ∞(Infinity) with the track “A Midsummer Evening.”

Gone are the willowing accordions those who haven’t followed Tiersen since the Amelie and Good Bye Lenin soundtracks might expect. The track dovetails nicely with Skyline, creating an orchestral pop that feels both capable of being stripped down to an acoustic format while being eerily bombasitc.

Tiersen points out that this track, like many of the tracks on the new LP, began by tinkering with toys while he was recording in Iceland. He says of the process:

“The idea was to start with toy instruments as a reference to my early works, then manipulate the sounds electronically. Then I added a new layer of acoustic instrumentation, and repeated the same process. Finally I repeated the process once more with strings, so the whole album was a constant back and forth from acoustic to electronic to digital, and then back to analogue.”

∞(Infinity) features collaborations with the all-female Icelandic ensemble Amiina, Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap), and Ólavur Jákupsson, who frequently plays with Tiersen’s live band.

Tiersen has also annoucned a full North American tour. Find the tour dates and stream of “A Midsummer Evening” below.
